Leading the way – Club Cricket in the 21st Century

July 13, 2016 Leave a comment

For some time now we, along with most other cricket clubs in England, have experienced increasing difficulty with player availability for the 100-over League cricket format at 2nd XI level.

The Coleshill CC Committee met to discuss this important structural shift in amateur cricket, and to consider a positive response to it. Recognising that it is vital for the Club still to have two regular adult teams – but also understanding that the longer format does not appeal to everyone – we have taken the decision to pull the 2nd XI out of the League with immediate effect.

This now allows us to play a more friendly, and shorter, form of 2nd XI cricket (across various Saturdays and Sundays) at Coleshill, against a variety of wandering and local sides, which we are greatly looking forward to. Details of fixtures will be announced in due course but provisionally these are scheduled for 21st August, 28th August and 10th September.

We are making these changes specifically to encourage existing and new playing members, who do not wish to commit to the existing format, to reconsider their availability for the remainder of the season and going forward into 2017. The committee concludes that without a proactive 2nd XI the future of the Club is at risk and you are urged to respond to this initiative positively and preferably directly to me.

The Coleshill Colts took part in the annual Wooburn Cricket Tournament at the weekend – and they only went and won! A huge congratulations to these future stars.

Here is the team being presented with their winners’ medals and the cup by Olympian Sam Mead (Team GB’s hockey centre-forward).

Champions!

With the Coleshill 1st XI and 2nd XI continuing to struggle in their respective leagues, the competition for places is certainly hotting up now!

The only way is up

It’s been a rough for weeks for Coleshill CC, as the league season nears the halfway stage. The 1st XI are in a miserable run of form that has seen them fail to record a win since the opening match of the season. The 2nd XI – who have struggled for numbers this season – have fared little better. It means both teams are one place off the bottom of their respective divisions and flirting with relegation.

There’s still plenty of cricket to be played though, starting today (weather permitting!). The 1st XI travel to Binfield, while the 2nd XI host Little Marlow. Your support, as ever, is welcome.

Up The Coleshill!

Early season struggles

May 16, 2016 Leave a comment

After the optimism of the opening weekend of the season, Coleshill have found the going far tougher in recent weeks.

Two weekends ago, the 1st XI suffered a 121-run at the hands of Taplow, despite Shak picking up another 4-wicket haul. This was followed by a draw, on Saturday, against White Waltham, who posted a formidable 270-4. In reply, Joel Deane (42) and Dom Spencer (33) top scored for Coleshill as they earned a draw, finishing on 188-8.

The 2nd XI meanwhile have endured a torrid time with the bat. They were skittled out for 88 by Penn & Tylers Green a fortnight ago in a 10-wicket defeat, and fared little better this weekend after Holyport bowled them all out for just 96. Despite a couple of early wickets from Ali Khan, Holyport eased to a 6-wicket win.

League season off to a flyer

The league season began in earnest on Saturday – and despite some below average temperatures, both Coleshill sides put in above average performances to secure the perfect start to the new season.

The 1st XI hosted Denham, and skittled their opposition for just 109, the wickets shared between Mike Scott (3-29), Mohammed Shakil (4-41) and Khuram Hussain  (3-10). Despite the early loss of Lee Skinner and Dominic Spencer, Dan Stay (36 not out) and Martin Bambridge (50 not out) guided Coleshill home to a comfortable 8-wicket win.

The 2nd XI travelled to The Lee, and come out on top in a closely-fought encounter. The hosts were restricted to 168-8 from their 52 overs. The Coleshill batsmen – led by a innings of 68 from Wajhat Ali – held their nerve to claim a 3-wicket win.

Next Saturday, the 1st XI travel to Taplow, while the 2nd XI welcome Penn & Tylers Green.
